SpaceX has made new progress in the preparations for the 12th Integrated Flight Test (IFT-12) of the Starship program. On March 1st (U.S. time), the Starship V3 prototype (Ship 39) was rolled out to SpaceX’s Massey Outpost for its first major ground tests, laying an important foundation for the upcoming 12th integrated flight test of the Starship program. According to the latest update, Ship 39 has successfully passed the initial tests, which are designed to set the stage for its return to the hangar for Static Fire tests in late March.
Massey Outpost (commonly referred to as Massey’s) is a key ground testing facility for SpaceX located at the Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas. It is mainly used for cryogenic testing, engine testing and structural testing of Starship and Super Heavy booster prototypes, allowing the company to conduct critical tests in an area away from the launch pad without affecting normal launch operations.
As the first prototype of the Starship V3 architecture, Ship 39 (named V3 SN1 by Elon Musk) has the core goal of verifying full reusability, which is a key upgrade compared with previous models. The initial tests conducted at Massey’s this time include ambient pressure tests, aiming to verify the structural integrity of the spacecraft’s propellant tanks and other key components under normal pressure conditions. After the tests, the SpaceX team inspected the vehicle to ensure all systems operated as expected.
After completing the initial tests at Massey’s Outpost, Ship 39 will return to the hangar for further preparations. The next key milestone is the Static Fire test scheduled for late March. The Static Fire test will verify the performance and reliability of the spacecraft’s engines by igniting them, which is a crucial step before the actual flight mission. Ship 39 is equipped with the new Raptor V3 engines, with a single engine thrust of up to 280 tons, representing a significant upgrade compared with the previous Raptor V2 engines.
The 12th Starship flight mission is expected to be a critical test for the V3 architecture, which has undergone comprehensive upgrades in power, structure and recovery systems. Elon Musk has publicly expressed his confidence in the V3 design, stating that he is "highly confident that the V3 design will achieve full reusability". If this mission is successful, it will bring SpaceX one step closer to its goal of low-cost, high-frequency space travel, and lay the foundation for future missions such as lunar landings and Mars exploration.
Prior to the testing of Ship 39, the Super Heavy Booster B19, which will be paired with it to perform the 12th Starship flight mission, has also been transported to the test site for cryogenic verification to ensure the compatibility and reliability of the entire rocket system. As of now, all preparations for the 12th Starship flight mission are progressing steadily, and the specific launch date will be determined based on the results of subsequent tests and the approval of the flight license by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
